Bern tourists advised not to drink Aare river water
Tourists to Bern are being told to ignore comments on TripAdvisor that it’s safe to drink the water direct from the river Aare.
Several users on the site say the river is so clean you can swim and drink at the same time.
Although the water is of excellent quality – it’s not safe to drink. The city’s drinking water comes from ground water.
You can swim in the river safely – and thousands do every summer – but there are traces of fecal matter and after heavy rain some of the city’s sewers will overflow into the river.
One local doctor says don’t drink the water – but an accidental mouthful while swimming is unlikely to make you sick.
