Doctor avoids jail after accepting suicide request
A doctor has avoided jail after assisting the suicide of a woman who was mentally ill.
Although Switzerland allows assisted suicide, the law states the person must of sound mind.
The 61-year-old doctor from canton Basel Country was given a 15-month suspended sentence and fined CHF 20,000.
Judges ruled the 60-year-old woman who wanted to die was clinically depressed and not able to make the best decisions for her own life. Her initial attempts to end her life through established organizations were rejected.
