Non-Swiss gambling sites to be blocked from Swiss internet
Non-Swiss gambling websites will be banned from next month.
In June last year voters agreed to close access to foreign online casinos.
It’s thought around CHF 250m a year is gambled with casinos based abroad, mainly in Gibraltar and Malta.
Those in favour of the new law says it’s to protect tax revenue generated by Swiss casinos – which is earmarked for civil society and the pension funds.
Others warn it’s a step towards state censorship of the internet.
From July, internet service providers will have to block the domain names of casinos published by the Federal Gaming Commission.
