FIFA asks to become NGO
The world football body FIFA is asking the Swiss government to upgrade its status to a non-governmental body.
Currently it’s listed as a non-profit organization.
FIFA says its request to be recognized as an NGO is not for tax reasons – but for recruitment.
It says it has trouble recruiting as it has to use part of the 8,500 work permits available for non-EU staff available every year. NGOs are exempt.
But there could be some resistance to allowing the scandal-hit body to be on the same level as the Red Cross or the UN.
But the head, Gianni Infantino, says FIFA has cleaned up its act and has a zero tolerance for corruption.
