Foreign-sounding names discriminated against in rent market

National News // By Tay Kinnear // June 11, 2019

A survey by the Federal Housing Office is confirming what many may have suspected – those with a foreign sounding name are less likely to be invited to view apartments available to rent.

The researchers sent out more than 10,000 application letters using a variety of Swiss and non-Swiss names.

Those with non-Swiss names were 10% less like to be offered a viewing. The impact was more noticeable with mid-market rents and below – around CHF 3,000 a month.

Non-Swiss had more luck with expensive homes.
