Since a 5 centimes charge was added for single use plastic bags at supermarkets, use has dropped by 86%.

The charge was added by most shops as a voluntary measure in 2016.

It was hoped it would cut the use by 70% by the year 2025 – but that target has already been reached.

As the voluntary move seems to be working, the Swiss Retail Federation says there’s no need for parliament to bring in a law.
