James Bond film celebrates 50th on top of Shilthorn
Bond fans and a real James Bond gathered on top of the Shilthorn on Saturday to mark the 50th anniversary of the film ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’.
The Australian actor, George Lazenby, played the lead role in the movie and was joined by bondgirl, Catherine Schnell at the mountain top restaurant – together with around 300 fans.
The head of the Shilthornbahn, Christoph Egger, says the filming has changed the resort permanently. The current helicopter pad was built by the production company and was not part of the initial design. When not being used for helicopters – it’s a viewing platform.
Also, the link with the film brings in thousands of Bond fans every year. The restaurant was the set of the hideaway of the villain Blofeld.
Although the film is now considered as one of the best Bond films, it was the only time Lazenby played the lead. He decided to pull out of the role, saying the character is a brute.
His decision mystifies fellow actors to this day.
