Environmental parties increasingly gather voter support
The latest opinion polls ahead of parliamentary elections in October show voters are increasingly leaning to environmental parties.
If the vote had been held last weekend, the Green Party would have triumphed according to the Tamedia survey. All the other leading parties’ lost ground.
In a challenge to the right-wing Swiss People’s Party, many of its traditional supporters now believe more should be done to protect the environment.
The party has been blocking the phasing out of nuclear power, bringing in a carbon tax and adding a pollution charge to air tickets.
Especially concerned by the environment are farmers – and they are traditional Swiss People’s Party voters.
