Transalpine goods traffic comes under pressure
Measures have been announced to speed up the transfer of goods traffic from Swiss roads to rail.
The Transport Minister Simonetta Sommaruga made the announcement at a meeting of the Alpine Initiative group over the weekend. The group, which was founded 30 years ago, aims to protect the Alpine region from the negative effects of transit traffic through Switzerland.
The association has called for efforts to further reduce CO2 emissions by banning diesel lorries crossing the Alps from 2035.
The Transport Minister’s proposals include price reductions for cargo trains and higher fees for older and high-polluting trucks.
