Basel chemical industry targeted by demonstrators
An estimated 2,000 people protested on the streets of Basel over the weekend against agrochemical firms, which they say are destroying rainforests and contributing to the extinction of many insect species due to the production of pesticides.
The demonstration was part of a global movement.
Demonstrators marched to the headquarters of the Chinese-owned ChemChina company, formerly Syngenta, on Saturday. Multinational agrochemical companies Bayer and BASF were also targeted by the demonstrators.
The protest in Basel was supported by trade unions, left-wing political parties, and environmental and human rights groups.
