Arctic blast breaks records and causes accidents
The weekend’s arctic blast brought snow and ice across the country and caused several accidents. Snow was down to 500 metres in places. The city of Bern had 4cm yesterday morning. The last time there was snow in May was in 1945 – but that was only 1cm.
Sankt Gallen had more – 19cm, according to Meteosuisse. The last time the canton saw snow in May was in 1957.
The wintery conditions caused several accidents as drivers were unprepared for the conditions.
There are also warnings about walking in the forest as the heavy wet snow could bring down tree branches.
There are worries the late cold weather could harm fruit and wine growers.
