Easter holiday traffic backs up 14km at Gotthard tunnel
The Easter Holiday getaway started over the weekend - leading to major delays at the Gotthard tunnel.
At one point the queue to pass through the alps was 14 km long and a two-hour delay.
The problems are heightened by the fact that many mountain passes remain closed due to snow.
The TCS motoring organisation is urging drivers to take other routes through the mountains such as the Simplon tunnel or avoid peak times.
Although voters have given the green light for a new Gotthard road tunnel – costing an estimated CHF 3bn – that won’t open until 2030.
