National News // April 10, 2019

An American tourist says she had to spend a night in custody at Zurich airport after she arrived with a passport that only had 85 days left to run.

The rules for non-European nationals entering the Schengen zone state passports must have at least 90 days of validity remaining from the date the visitor is due to return home.

The woman had flown into Zurich from San Francisco. Immigration officers denied her entry, and as there wasn’t a return flight until the next day, she says she spent the night in a cell.

Normally airlines will check entry requirements at check-in. But the woman checked-in online and didn’t have luggage.

Lufthansa has agreed to refund the passenger the cost of the flight.
