Swiss population rises to 8.5m
The number of people living in Switzerland is up a bit – at 8.5m. That’s a rise of 0.7%.
Much of the increase is due to immigration – last year 45,500 moved into the country. The natural increase, the difference between births and deaths, was nearly 19,000.
The latest figures from the Federal Statistics Office also show canton Geneva has the highest percentage of foreigners – 40% are not Swiss.
In all 6.3m are Swiss nationals and 2.1m are foreign.
