Government hopes burka law will see off national ban
The government has published its plan it hopes will see off an upcoming national vote which seeks to ban all face-covering clothing.
The government says it is against a federal law and wants the cantons to continue to legislate locally. But is proposing to bring in laws to make sure faces have to be shown for identity checks by authorities, such as immigration.
So far only Ticino and Sankt Gallen have brought in burka bans.
A nationwide vote is required after campaigners collected enough signatures in September 2017. A date for the vote has yet to be set.
