Rowers run over by barge survive
Two rowers on the Rhine near Basel had a narrow escape after a barge weighing 2,600 tonnes ran over them.
The accident happened near the German border at Muttenz yesterday morning. The barge crew failed to spot the small boat until the very last moment, but they immediately cut the engine and the men, 52 and 53 year old German nationals, emerged from under the ship.
German police, who took charge of the incident, say it was a miracle the men survived. They were both visibly shaken and one was taken to hospital for checks.
The barge skipper has been arrested under suspicion of not taking due care and attention.
