Proposed speed limit increase on autoroute rejected
Canton Valais has rejected plans to increase the speed limit on the A9 autoroute to 140 kph.
The parliament voted down a proposal put forward by the Swiss People’s Party. Those who support the higher limit say improved safety features on the roads and better cars means it would be safe to drive faster.
But those against say the best way to improve travel times would be to make sure traffics flows and it would increase pollution.
They point out a journey between Martigny and Sion would only be 2 minutes faster, but increase fuel consumption by 30%.
