The Geneva cantonal hospital had to bring in more staff and suspend its Facebook page after it was inundated by calls enquiring about the health of the Algerian president who’s being treated in a private wing.

There have been protests in his home country as 82-year-old Abdelaziz Bouteflika intends to stand for another term in elections due next month.

He suffered a stroke in 2013 and is rarely seen.

He’s been in Geneva since the end of February and there have been demonstrations outside the hospital.
