Child-kidnapping numbers on the rise
More than 100 children were kidnapped in Switzerland last year – a new record.
The numbers are from the Federal Office of Justice.
The main reason for the increase, according to the government, is there are more marriages involving two nationalities and the rising divorce rate.
The child is often taken abroad by a parent who has lost custody.
Out of the 100, 68 children were taken to a country which has signed the international Hague Abduction Convention. The convention allows courts to order the child’s return immediately. Last year there were 20 court orders demanding the child is returned to Switzerland.
