Strong franc brings Swiss tourism down
Although more foreign tourists are visiting Switzerland – the numbers are still massively down on 10 years ago.
The Swiss Tourist Board says last year there were 39 million overnight stays in hotels – up nearly 4% from the year before.
But compared to 2008, the figure is down 43%.
Tourism in Switzerland has been hit by the strong franc – which makes the country very expensive.
Visitors from Germany are the most common – followed by the United States. Americans made up more than 2 million of the overnight stays, up 10% from 2017. Also, Asian visitors are up 10%.
But the slumping pound is hitting UK citizens. The number of Brits staying overnight is down 2.3%. The pound is down more than 10% since the Brexit vote.
