Italian and Swiss border guards clamp down on illegal immigration
Swiss and Italian border guards have started joint patrols along the border to tackle illegal immigration.
A deal with the two countries was signed two years ago – and guards have been training for the patrols.
Under the deal, the border guards will be allowed to be armed despite which country they happen to be in – but their powers of arrest will be limited.
If in Switzerland, the Italian guards will be in a support role – and then vice-versa if in Italy.
The move was triggered after Italy formally complained about overnight border crossing closures. Switzerland says the move was necessary to combat crime.
