Extra German lessons fee proposed for Thurgau schools
Education authorities in canton Thurgau want to charge parents a fee for extra German lessons for primary school children if their language skills are not sufficient to keep up with the rest of the class.
The move could be unconstitutional as free education is guaranteed.
There’s little political support for changing the constitution, except from the Swiss People’s Party.
But it’s not the foreign population that lacks the necessary language skills. Many children with poor German come from Swiss-French speaking families.
