Sextortion victims on the rise
More and more people are the victims of so called ‘sextortion’. And government advice is don’t pay.
Sextortion is when fraudsters send an email to an individual saying they have compromising pictures and videos. They then demand cash or they say they will send all the material to everyone on the victim’s contact list.
But the government cyber security website, MELANI, advises not to pay as it’s unlikely any embarrassing pictures exist.
Many people are clearly parting with cash – it’s thought in the last 6 months of last year over CHF 360,000 was paid.
