Majority of prisoners not Swiss citizens
Switzerland is locking up more foreigners – and many of those don’t even live in the country.
More than half, 52%, of people in Swiss jails don’t have an address in the country – and a further 28% are non-Swiss, who are residents.
In total, the number of people in prison is down from a high of over 7,000 to 6,907 – but analysts say the trend is rising.
Experts say this is down to courts handing out tougher sentences and an increased reluctance to release prisoners early.
