Swan cull permitted in canton Nidwalden
Federal wildlife authorities have given the green light to canton Nidwalden to kill swans.
The birds are considered a risk to aircraft at the Buochs airport. Pilots haven been forced to abort takeoffs and landings due to swans.
The canton has already tried removing eggs and the occasional shooting of individual birds. But the new rules allow for a cull.
There are conditions. There must be at least 15 swans near the airport and the killing has to take place before the breeding season.
Unsurprisingly, animal rights groups are condemning the move.
