The former Swiss People’s Party leader told a rally of more than a thousand in Zurich on Friday evening the deal would be harmful for the economy and threaten social harmony.

The new treaty is designed to simplify a range of agreements Switzerland already has with the EU.

The president Ueli Maurer, who also belongs to the Swiss People’s Party says the deal meets the challenge of the 21st century.

The EU seems to be running out of patience with Switzerland. A leaked paper suggests European negotiations will be put on hold unless more progress is made.
