Sleeper trains a greener alternative to flying
Environmentalists are demanding Swiss Federal Railways bring back night trains to provide an alternative to flying.
But all sleeper trains have been sold. The service was stopped more than 10 years ago.
There are still some sleeper trains running from Switzerland, to Berlin, Hamburg, Vienna, Prague and Budapest. But they’re all operated by Austrian trains.
The Young Green party says 18% of greenhouse gasses from Switzerland are generated by flying – and overnight trains are a better alternative.
Even so, the trains may not be able to compete on price. A ticket from Zurich to Hamburg costs CHF 299, a flight CHF 79.
