Avalanche warnings very high in many areas
The heavy snow has pushed up avalanche warnings right across the Alps – especially in canton Graubünden.
The Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research has issued a 4 out of 5 alert for the eastern parts of the country. It says there’s a danger of major avalanches and warns skiers to stay on the pistes.
There are also high alerts in other cantons, such as Vaud and Valais, where the risk is described as ‘considerable’.
A 16-year-old boy was killed in an avalanche yesterday afternoon in the Austrian Alps near the Swiss border. Police say he was skiing with his family at the time. His parents and brother were unharmed.
The warnings are likely to stay in place for the next 24 hours as more snow is expected today.
