Green party launch anti-sprawl initiative.
The Young Green party officially launched their campaign to stop urban sprawl yesterday in Bern.
The issue will go to the vote next month.
The party wants to limit the amount of space than can be built on to the current levels. Organisers say there are plenty of brown field sites that could be developed instead of building on green spaces.
The co-president of Young Greens, Luzian Franzini, says the equivalent space of eight football fields is lost every day to urban building.
The Federal Council and Parliament are urging the initiative to be rejected as they say it’s too restrictive and fails to take into account the needs of the people or the economy and would cause property prices to rise.
