The Swiss foreign minister is on a five-day trip to Africa – where he will be examining the working conditions of miners employed by the Swiss based Glencore group.

There have been allegations of exploitative employment practices – a charge denied by the multinational.

Ignazio Cassis started at the Mopani copper mine in Zambia. Cassis has tweeted he’s impressed with the efforts to modernize and train younger workers.

Late last year the government issued guidelines for commodity companies outlining best working practices. The sector is extremely important for Switzerland.

He will also visit Zimbabwe and South Africa and see HIV/aids programmes being run by Swiss agencies.
