Switzerland unlikely to host climate change conference in 2020
The federal government says it doesn’t want Switzerland to host a major climate change conference in 2020, known as COP 26, despite Geneva being keen.
The decision will be made at COP 24, due to start this weekend in Poland.
A government spokesman says it’s too short a notice as the conference has 20,000 participants and could cost CHF 200m.
Italy, the UK and Turkey have all expressed an interest in hosting the event.
The meeting of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is held every year. Next year’s was due to be in Brazil, but the offer has been withdrawn as the Brazilian President elect, Jair Bolsonaro denies climate change.
