New numbers find 4 tonnes of medication wasted daily
We waste about a billion francs worth of pharmaceuticals every year – and are not disposing of the drugs properly.
That’s according to federal hazardous waste numbers. Four tonnes of medication are thrown away every day in the country.
The main reasons are people don’t complete drugs courses and then the pills expire. The drugs have normally been paid for by health insurance companies.
There are moves to cut waste by selling drugs in smaller quantities.
If you have expired drugs, you should take them back to the pharmacy which will make sure they’re disposed of safely.
