The numbers were put together by the SonntagsBlick newspaper.

There are 34,800 government workers – and it works out at CHF 3,500 per person. In comparison, a large company will expect an average of CHF 750 per person.

The biggest spender is the defence ministry with a bill of CHF 45m. The head of the army, Philippe Rebord, admits a culture shift is required.

The figures exclude the Federal Council and the courts.
