Bern urged to become more bilingual
The canton of Bern should do more to promote its bilingualism.
That’s the conclusion of an expert commission set up by the cantonal government.
11% of the Bern population speaks French.
The commission says hospitals should have all the signage in both languages, no matter where in the canton they’re based and schools should promote both languages better.
An idea that all street names should be in two languages – as they are in the city of Biel/Bienne – was rejected after opposition from the city of Bern.
The canton wants to ease the divide between the French speaking parts of the canton around the Jura mountains.
