Switzerland considers higher speed limits for electric cars

National News // By Tay Kinnear // Nov. 12, 2018

The Swiss motor trade is reacting with caution after Austria announced it may allow electric cars to drive faster on roads which have a speed limit to reduce pollution.

Like Switzerland, Austria has some roads with a lower limit with the aim to improve local air quality.

The plan is to allow electric cars to travel at 130 kph on stretches that are limited to 100 for the rest. The Austrian government says the idea should increase the attractiveness of going electric.

But car trade bodies in Switzerland says the idea will be difficult to enforce and it should also apply to hydrogen or gas-powered cars – or even those with multiple occupants.
