Moutier vote to change cantons void
Election officials have declared last year’s vote in the town of Moutier void. Locals were voting to decide if the town should switch cantons – from German speaking Bern to French speaking Jura.
The decision was made to make the change, but only by 137 votes.
But officials say there’s evidence of non-residents registering to vote.
Those campaigning for the canton change say they’ll continue to fight.
The Justice Minister, Simonetta Sommaruga, says she hopes people will react calmly and also points out the decision can be appealed.
In the meantime, officials in canton Bern says talks on transferring the town to canton Jura will now be stopped.
