Switzerland remains good in English - but German speakers are better
Switzerland has slipped one place in the annual English Proficiency Index. But the country remains strong with its command of the main international business language.
The survey is carried out annually by the private language training company EF.
Switzerland overall is classed as ‘good’ and is 15th out of 88 countries. But the average is dragged down by French and Italian speakers.
German speakers around Zurich are better at English in Switzerland – with a rating of ‘very good’. But French speaking regions are classed as ‘average’.
Other German speaking nations are also generally very good at English – as is Scandinavia.
But being very good at English doesn’t necessarily mean it will hold back a country’s development. Japan is classed as ‘weak’.
