Geneva crackdown on unlicensed bars
Geneva is finally going to get tough with illegal bars – much to the relief of the legal sector which complains of unfair competition.
For decades the canton has had hundreds of unlicensed bars – offering cheaper drinks.
A tough hospitality law which came into force two years ago is being used. Illegal bars are getting letters from the authorities telling them they have to close. If they don’t, the police will arrive, throw everyone out and change the locks.
Since the new law was passed, over 2,000 bars have become licenced – but its thought there are still more than 200 operating illegally.
