Woman sues doctor over child's hereditary disease
A woman is in court in Bern suing her gynecologist for a million francs for not performing tests on her unborn child to check if it carried a hereditary disease.
After she gave birth, it was discovered the child does have the condition.
The woman says if the tests had been carried out and proved positive, she would have aborted.
But the doctor says she told him she wanted to have the child no matter what. He didn’t perform the tests as there is no legal right to know.
The court will only be determining the legal question – but selective abortion on the ground of health remains highly controversial.
