27,000 signatures for petition to continue migrant-rescue work
27,000 people have signed a petition to allow a ship to continue its work rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean.
The petition was handed-in in Bern.
The ship, The Aquarius, has been sailing under the Panamanian flag – but the South American country says it has withdrawn its registration.
Campaigners are urging the government to allow it to sail under the Swiss flag. The move has the backing of four parliamentarians.
But it could be politically sensitive as Europe tries to control the flow of migrants. Italy has closed its ports to such vessels.
The boat is being rented by MSF and SOS Méditerranée.
