Asylum numbers sink to eight year low
Some cantons are closing asylum centres as the number of people applying is down to an eight-year low.
According to a report in yesterday’s NZZ newspaper, the Federal Migration Office says 16,500 have requested asylum this year – less than half the number in 2015.
The trend mirrors the situation in the rest of Europe.
But the government is warning against complacency – saying the outlook in conflict areas is uncertain.
