Swiss residency permit denied to Abramovich

National News // By Tay Kinnear // Sept. 26, 2018

It’s been revealed the Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich was denied a Swiss residency permit on the advice of the police.

Federal migration officials asked the police their opinion on Abramovich. The report says the Russian is suspected of money laundering and links with organized crime.

Abramovich applied for a permit to live in the ski resort of Verbier in 2016. Canton Valais had already approved the request.

The media group Tamedia was given a copy of the police report earlier this year and has been fighting in court to release it after Abramovich got an injunction against publication.

The Russian’s lawyer says the allegations are false and points out he’s never been indicted in Switzerland of any crime.
