Cannabis study given green light by parliament
The lower house of parliament, the National Council, has narrowly backed a government plan to allow a study on how the legalization of cannabis could affect consumers and the market.
The University of Bern wanted to carry out the experiment, but the office of public health told them it would be illegal - although they backed the idea.
The health minister, Alain Berset, says the move is not a precursor to legalization – but it will allow a proper debate.
The bill would also allow the chronically ill to be given cannabis if there’s no alternative.
It still needs to be voted on in the Senate.
