Police officer fined for reselling licence plates

National News // Sept. 19, 2018

A Winterthur city police officer has been fined and could lose his job after he used the police computer to seek out the owners of low number licence plates.

Knowing that certain plates can be sold for a very high price, such as ZG 10 fetched over CHF 200,000 at a recent auction, the officer approached the owners – offered to buy their plates, and then resold them at a far higher price.

The court heard he did this nine times.

He’s been fined CHF 3,000 and will be on probation for two years for abuse of office. The internal procedure still has to decide his future as a police officer.
