Gotthard train tunnel closed due to two different problems
The Gotthard Base Tunnel was closed for several hours yesterday after two unrelated incidents.
In the northern tunnel, a freight train broke down and had to be pulled out. In the southern tunnel an overhead power line broke and needed engineering teams to fix it.
Trains running north were cancelled for most of yesterday morning, the southern route was closed for most of the day.
Services were delayed for about an hour as trains took the slower route over the pass.
But Swiss Federal Railways say services through the world’s longest train tunnel are generally excellent with a 99% punctuality rate since its opening in 2016.
