Swiss hand grenades on sale on markets in Libya

National News // Sept. 10, 2018

Swiss made hand grenades have been spotted for sale in street markets in Libya – and even on Facebook.

The weapons were made by Ruag. Arms sales to Libya have been banned for many years.

Photos of the grenades were published by the Australian Arms Analysis Center. Their research also shows they can be bought through a Facebook page run by someone called ‘Mohammad’.

Serial numbers show the consignment was initially sold to the United Arab Emirates in 2003. They were then sent to Jordan and some ended up in Syria.

A spokeswoman for the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs says the Swiss government has been in contact with the UAE about the misappropriation of the grenades.
