Geneva set to bring in minimum age for tobacco buying
Geneva is to bring in a minimum age for buying tobacco.
It may surprise you to learn the canton currently has no legal age limit for buying cigarettes – although many retailers do have a policy of not selling tobacco to those under 18.
Tobacco laws are set by the cantons. Most do have a minimum age already – ranging from 16 to 18.
The cantonal council of state has passed a bill to bring in a legal age of 18 – which will also apply to electronic cigarettes. The bill still has to be voted on by parliament, but it is expected to pass.
The new law should be in place by the end of the year.
For underage smokers – canton Schwyz is now the only canton with no legal age limit.
