Fewer asylum applications filed in July
The number of people who applied for asylum in Switzerland last month fell by nearly 20 per cent compared with the same month last year, according to figures from the State Secretariat for Migration.
In July, 1,374 applications were filed, with the most applications coming from migrants from Eritrea, followed by Syria, Turkey, Afghanistan and Iraq.
Even though asylum applications last month were lower than the same month in 2017, the number of applications in July rose by just over 10 per cent compared with June of this year. For several months, however, Switzerland has not been high on the list as a destination country for migrants arriving in Europe.
In July, nearly 2,000 migrants arrived on the Italian coast, much lower numbers than previously. However, the number of migrants arriving on the Spanish coast has increased to nearly 10,000 people.
