Suspected thief tries to evade police by jumping in Geneva river
A police chase in Geneva ended up with the suspect abandoning his getaway bicycle and jumping in the River Arve, in an attempted escape that could have been taken straight from a comedy sketch.
According to a report in the Tribune de Geneve, the man had broken into a shop in the city, thrown a safe from the shop window and escaped from the building by clambering down a drainpipe. He then fled from the scene on a bicycle along the boulevard du Pont-d'Arve, with police officers in hot pursuit.
The chase, which happened just over a week ago, according to the newspaper, ended when the suspect jumped from the pont des Acacias in to the River Arve and was carried away by the current, eventually being arrested at the Quai des Péniches. The man had been in the water for about 20 minutes. He was arrested on suspicion of several burglaries.
