Firefighters say it will take several months to restore a church in the centre of Geneva that was badly damaged by fire yesterday. The fire took hold yesterday afternoon at the Sacré-Cœur Catholic church in Plainpalais. It took three hours to bring the flames under control. Thankfully, no one was injured.
Twenty-three fire trucks and 50 fire fighters were at the scene. Initially, fire crews tackled the blaze from inside the building but had to be pulled out as the roof was in danger of collapsing. It quickly smashed through onto the ceiling of the nave.
Operations will continue at the church today, where fire investigators are checking to see if the structure of the building is safe. It’s believed that some works of art were completely destroyed in the fire although some have been saved. Forensic teams will now try to determine exactly how the fire started.
